Beyond the Helmet
L’Shawn Taylor, a 2023 graduate of Martin Luther High School and current student-athlete at Bemidji State University, describes his time at ML as the place where his faith was planted and made personal. “Hearing the gospel every week—through chapel, theology classes, and everyday life—planted a seed,” he says. Being immersed in Scripture and Christian discipleship each day shaped a faith that became central to who he is today.
“My life has changed because of hearing the gospel every week. That started something in me I couldn’t resist, and now my dependency on Christ is the main focus of my life.”
Athletics played a major role in L’Shawn’s experience, but Martin Luther helped him see that his identity was bigger than the sport itself. Football and wrestling were once where he placed his worth, but coaches like Coach Romano, Coach Hoppert, and Coach Pfaller consistently redirected his focus. “The cross on our helmet is bigger than football,” he says. Through team prayers, daily devotions, and coaches who modeled discipleship, he learned what it meant to compete with a greater purpose.
L’Shawn now serves as a student leader in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, helps organize group Bible studies, and participates in discipleship groups that bring together dozens of students for discussion, prayer, and encouragement. “I’ve given messages and spent extra time in prayer and preparation,” he shares.
For L’Shawn, being a Spartan alumnus means ongoing mentorship and deep pride. “I’m always proud to be a Spartan,” he says—grateful for the teachers, coaches, and faith-filled experiences that continue to guide his life beyond graduation.
